In this last part of the “Thought Control” activity, you will begin to put the knowledge and experience you gained in the first two parts into practical action.
So far, you’ve experienced what it’s like to turn the intensity of a positive emotion up and down simply by changing how you think about it. From that activity, you hopefully came to realize that you can choose to feel strong positive feelings whenever you want.
Next, you learned that you can easily diffuse your negative emotions and even feel good about the issues that were triggering them.
Now it’s time to experiment with how these changes in your thoughts and feelings can also change the way you act and improve the ultimate results you achieve in life.

The purpose of these “Thought Control” activities is for you to experience the power you have to change your thoughts and, as a result, to also change your feelings.
In the first part of the activity, you worked with the “positive” emotion of motivation. In this second part, you will extend that experience to include negative emotions, developing your ability to diffuse your negative emotions by changing the thoughts behind them.

We’ll start with a simple but revealing exercise that will give you a concrete experience of how your thoughts affect your feelings and how your feelings affect your actions.
Be sure to read the instructions before doing the activity because you’ll probably want to close your eyes during the activity… and it might be hard to read with your eyes closed!
To begin, think of a time in your past when you felt intensely motivated. Think of a specific time and imagine floating back into your body at that time, seeing what you saw, hearing what you heard, and feeling those feelings of being intensely motivated. Notice what your feelings of motivation feel like as you fully relive that memory.
